Mr. Shailendra Pratap Singh Bhati, a Media practitioner, having more than 12-year experience in Print Media, Digital Media Radio Media and Film-Festivals and its studies. His core areas of expertise are Cultural beat, Historical Feature Writing, and Education Beat of Journalism, along with story telling at Radio Media and Film Festivals. While working with various prestigious media houses, All Indian Radio, An NGO in Education Sector (Development Communication) and a film Society, his several articles has been published in various renowned newspapers of India Since 2011. As a Film-researcher and Cine-buff, he finds Cinema as an impactful tool of Media Teaching Methodology and Journalistic expression. A National executive team member of ‘Cinema of Resistance’(Association of 18 Independent Film Societies including a chapter in London School of Economics, London). He is one of the film festival networker, trying making an International network of Independent film makers and people funded film clubs. Presently, he is giving consultancy to some a news portal and NGOs regarding Development Communication. As a member of advisory and editorial board, he is helping them in planning, designing and circulation strategy of Digital Storytelling section.

The School of Mass Communication (SMC) offers three year B.A (Journalism and Mass Communication) with half a dozen specialization tracks – Print, Television, Cinema, Advertising & Public Relations, Digital Media and Radio – for undergraduate students.  The specialization would help the students opt for their favourite media or communication vertical with documentary evidence. The School offers Two year M.A (Journalism and Mass Communication) degree with a couple of specialization tracks – Communication and Digital Branding & Reputation Management. The programmes have been approved by University Grants Commission.

Besides these, the School runs one year PG Diplomas in Crime Scene Photography and Forensics for Crime Reporting. In fact, the JECRC University is the second university in the country after National Forensic Sciences University to offer courses related to Forensic Journalism. The SMC also offers one year PG Diplomas in Investigative Journalism, Digital Media and Cinema Studies.

The School also offers one-year PG Diplomas in Investigative Journalism, Digital Media, and Cinema Studies. As well, it offers PhD in Journalism and Mass Communication.

The School provides students opportunities to practice Journalism in the fields of Newspaper, Radio, TV, Digital Media, and Magazine, Advertising & Public Relations, Event Management, and Cinema Studies covering all dimensions of the media.

These programmes enable students to perform as Journalists with intellect and integrity. By publishing a daily newspaper, a magazine, producing radio and television news bulletins, uploading interviews of celebrities on our YouTube channel, writing official blogs, writing for digital media platforms, and making short films, the school inculcates professional journalistic culture in the students.

The School operates a community radio 90.8 whereby students and local community leaders are trained in anchoring, RJying, and script writing, etc. and allowed to gain hands-on experience of running different shows.  

Placements

The SMC witnessed 100 per cent placements in January 2023 with all its BA (JMC) Fifth Semester and MA (JMC) Final Year students joining companies in different media verticals before the completion of their graduation and post-graduation respectively. In fact, there were also more than half a dozen students who worked during their 5th Semester tenure also.

Career Options

 No other subject offers the kind of job opportunities Journalism & Mass Communication offers.  A student can choose from over a dozen professions after pursuing a degree or masters in Journalism and Mass Communication. This includes working as a journalist in a newspaper, a television channel, a radio station, a news portal, and a magazine. He can also work in an Ad.& PR firm, corporate communications, event management, content writing, photography, andsocial media. He also has the choice of becoming a blogger, translator, multimedia editor, podcaster, web content manager etc.As well, he has the option of getting into filmmaking, script writing, cinematography, and other verticals of cinema, OTT, and television serials. With availability of unlimited online space and horizon, the student also has the option of becoming an entrepreneur with a small investment.

STATE-OF-THE-ART MEDIA LABS

The School of Journalism and Mass Communication is well equipped with state-of-the-art media labs i.e. TV. Studio, Production Control Room (PCR), Radio Studio, Video Editing Suite and News Room. These Media Labs are established in more than 2200 square feet area having most advanced software and technology. From TV panel discussions to documentary film making, Radio bulletins, to daily newspaper publishing, JU media students report, research, shoot, and fine-tune diverse media productions. The School was started in 2016 and is approaching a milestone with learning while doing pedagogy.

MEDIA ENTITIES RUN BY JU MEDIA STUDENTS

With the motto, ‘We Practice Journalism’, JU Media students run their own six media entities i.e. daily newspaper- THE MESSAGE, TV news bulletin – THE TV TALK, Audio news bulletin- THE VOICE, magazine – JU Samvaad, Youtube Channel- THE COMMUNICATOR, official blog – Alaav and news portalhttps://drishtikontoday.com/ to produce world-class journalists and mass communicators, the School of Mass Communication (SMC) believes in providing hands-on training to students in reporting, editing, page designing, magazine journalism, anchoring, RJying, vlogging, blogging, and filmmaking, advertising, public relations, video-editing, audio-editing, script writing, etc. To keep pace with the changing dimensions of the new media, the students started producing a weekly podcast and a weekly vlog six months back.

THE MESSAGE (NEWSPAPER)

BA (JMC) first year students publish a two-page daily tabloid- THE MESSAGE. They write, edit, design, draw cartoons, and publish the newspaper for over 10000 readers. Renowned National media academicians and media practitioners have appreciated this disciplined and creative media exercise. The students have till now published over 400 editions of the newspaper. The 400th edition of the newspaper was unveiled by senior journalist Soni Sangwan, and radio expert Divakar Acharya.

THE VOICE (AUDIO NEWS BULLETIN)

This is an audio forum for JU media students to practice Radio production exercises. They produce a five to seven-minute-long Audio bulletin-THE VOICE, as a daily media feature. They circulate it via the sound cloud and YouTube among 10000 listeners in and out of the campus. They produced 200th edition of The Voice last year. THE TV TALK (TV NEWS BULLETIN)

With the purpose of practicing TV Journalism, JU media students produce a weekly TV bulletin. They write TV bulletin scripts, take video bytes,and shoot Piece to Camera (P to C). They do anchoring, reporting, and editing within the given deadlines.

 

Drishtikontoday.com (NEWS PORTAL)

Department of Journalism and Mass Communication initiated its news portal, Drishnikontoday.com in 2020. The media bodytrains the students to use their skills in news gathering and feature writing to produce content for the digital platform, familiarizesthem with critical thinking and code of ethics for digital journalism, and trains them to create stories and other contents using text, photographs, graphs, graphics, infographics, sound, audio, video contents, mobile telephony, and other new tools and technology. THE COMMUNICATOR (YOUTUBE CHANNEL)

JU media students run an official YouTube Channel- THECOMMUNICATOR. For this Channel, our budding Journalists have taken interviews of the renowned media personalities like Barkha Dutt, ArunShourie, Shekhar Gupta, General Syed Ata Hasnain, L.P.  JU Samvaad

It is a thematic bilingual bi-annual magazine where students learn and develop key magazine production skills, including design, feature writing, marketing, and business strategies. The objective of the magazine is to train the students in analyzing news, expressing their views, and multimedia journalism, the demand in today’s media world.The first edition was unveiled by veteran filmmaker Shyam Benegal. The first edition was dedicated to cinema – Indian and global. The cover story was on Charlie Chaplin, the legendary British comedian, who regaled audience in Hollywood for several decades. The second edition of the magazine was based on deliberations that took place during Manthan, the first International Media Conclave of the SMC. 

Community Radio

The School of Mass Communication has its own Community Radio Station (90.8) having a coverage radius of 15KM. It provides students hands-on experience in radio technology including speaking skills, scriptwriting for radio shows, voice modulation, and much more. Students’ participation in the radio activity is giving them Industry practice.

The Voice Podcast

The students have been producing a weekly podcast on current, topical, and relevant issues for over six months. MA (JMC) first year students Priyanshi Agrawal and Chitrankshi Khangarot did a podcast in September 2022 on issues one faces when one is enrolled in a college.

The Monday Vlog

The students have been producing a weekly podcast on burning and relevant issues for over six months. Dean Prof. Narendra Kaushik recorded a vlog on relevance of Gandhian principles around the birth anniversary of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi.

DEPARTMENTAL CLUB ACTIVITIES/LECTURES/WORKSHOPS BY INDUSTRY EXPERTS

Our media pedagogy is implemented through various creative classroom and club activities. ‘We Practice Journalism’ philosophy engages the students efficiently and creatively in classrooms. In club activities, the students organize T.V. panel discussions, debates, poetry, and story narration sessions, film-screening sessions, and theatre performances.

ACADEMIA-INDUSTRY RELATIONS : MEDIA SUMMIT

Manthan

The three day International Media Conclave Manthan was held from September 15 to September 17, 2021. The conclave speakers were from seven different countries. It attracted an audience from the community of academics, researchers, and media practitioners from across the globe. It was inaugurated by eminent sports journalist Ayaz Memon. The keynote speakers and panellists included Television journalist Sumit Awasthi, eminent Hindi journalist Yashwant Vyas, Communication Consultant Dilip Cherian, Filmmaker Avinash Das, and former BBC Radio Editor Rajesh Joshi. Kashmir Times Editor Anuradha Bhasin, Outlook’s Political Editor Bhavna Vij, RJ Devangana, Dainik Jagran’s Online Editor Kamlesh Raghuvanshi, and speakers from the United States of America, Cambodia, Romania, Palestine and other countries also were in attendance.

WONDER OF WORDS

Every year, JECRC University invites selected speakers from Jaipur Literature Festival at the campus. In its 8th edition of Wonder of Words, media students moderated the majority of sessionsand took interviews of the guests to publish a special edition of THE MESSAGE, took their 2- minute audio bytes for Audio bulletin THE VOICE and bytes for the T.V. bulletin The TV Talk and blog ALAAV. In the 9th edition of the WoW, SMC’s budding journalists managed 50 per cent of the programmes/activities.

 TALK JOURNALISM

Renowned politicians, prominent journalists and eminent authors meet our budding journalists in Talk Journalism at Fairmont Hotel, Jaipur. JU media students have participated and taken interviews of journalists like Barkha Dutt, Christina Lamb, RajdeepSardesai, Sushant Singh, ArunShourie, KalpeshYagnik, AyazMemon, KaranThapar, and others.

SAHITYA AAJTAK, NEW DELHI

Our media students joined the event at Indira Gandhi Centre for Arts, New Delhi, where the eminent Literary and Cine personalities like AnupamKher, AnuragKashyap, and RajdeepSardesai were in attendance. Our students met all these celebrities and had a talk with RajdeepSardesai.

ZEE STUDIO AUDITIONS IN JMC DEPT. FOR SOAP OPERAS

Zee Studio, Jaipur, has been conducting regular auditions of our students for its soap operas. Such auditions were held on September 05, 2020, in 2021, and 2022.

The auditions are held in media studio of the JMC department during the day. Students, who are interested in acting, participate in such auditions. The judges give them a script and ask to narratethe dialogues. The script isprovided to participants about half an hour before the audition.

INDUSTRIAL VISITS TO MEDIA AGENCIES

The JMC department believes in ‘Practice Journalism. Every now and then the students are takento different newspapers, television studios, and radio stations. The students visited the printing press of the national Hindi newspaper Dainik Bhaskar on February 22, 2020.In November 2022, the students were taken to Dainik Bhaskar Office where they got to know how a newsroom functions. Also they visited MY FM Radio Channel.

EXTENSION LECTURES

The Jaipur School of Communication has hosted a range of expert lectures with the gracious presence of Famous poet and Lyricist Javed Akhtar, renowned TV anchors Barkha Dutt and Abhigyan Prakash, Veteran Film Director Rahul Rawail and National Award winning Film Director Ramkamal Mukherjee, Popular voices of FM Radio Industry RJ Sayma and RJ Kartik, Senior Journalists Yashwant Vyas, L.P. Pant, Mukesh Mathur and Preeti Malholtra (Executive Editor, Dainik Bhaskar), Seasoned PR strategist Naveen Tripathi (CEO, Mercury Design), and International Film Academician Dr. Priyanka Savita (University of Leeds, UK). The list comprises of n-numbers of experts from various verticles of media industry.

  • Jaipur School of Communication, JECRC University had an online video session with Mr. Suvam Pal, the China-based media professional and author in April 2020.
  • Rajendra Singh (Waterman), known as waterman of India, spoke to the JMC students and taught them to conserve water
  • Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, department organized Keynote session of PR expert Rajesh Padmanabhan.
  • Faculty organized the special lecture of Shri Abhishek Tiwari, Cartoon Journalist of Rajasthan Patrika.
  • In the current year, the department has organised lectures with prominent podcaster Ashraf Engineer, a podcaster, and writer Meenakshi Reddy Madhavan, and film scholar Sushil Yati, and Vlogger Noveena Chakraborty.

WORKSHOPS

  • A thee-day workshop on ‘Changing Standards of News Media’ was organized by the Faculty of Journalism and Mass Communication. National Editor of Dainik Bhaskar Dr. Laxmi Prasad Pant shared his views on Ideation of News.
  • A workshop on ‘Changing Paradigm of News Media’ was conducted by Senior Deputy Editor of Business Line (The Hindu) Shishir Sinha. He gave a special lecture and explained how media is changing in the present scenario?
  • Google’s fact-checking workshop took place by Google trainer Aparna Praveen. She made media students aware about fake news.
  • The faculty development program for the faculty memberswas organized. Dr. Ekta Meghnani and Dr. Sapna Sharma gave presentations on writing research proposals.
  • Faculty of Journalism organized a photography exhibitionevent Pixel Hunt. Chief Guest of the event was Dr. Ajay Kumar Singh, Director, School of Journalism and Mass Communication, Haridev Joshi University of Journalism. Last year, the department organised a photography exhibition where India Today photo journalist Purshottam Diwakar was the judge.

Jatin Sharma, a budding photographer who has an eye for emotions, nature, settled for fiction in Khat. He collected love letters and designed the book. He edited the bookwith Mr. Shailendra Pratap Singh Bhati.

Akash Tiwari is a first-year student who has edited the book and Stuti Bafna has designed the book. Ajay Kasana, Bhavika Joshi, Sumit Sharma, Pooja Jangid, and Abhishek Vyas have written poems for the book.
