Wonder of Words-2016

JU Wonder of Words-2016- "A Literary Extravaganza"

It is said that as one lamp lights another nor grows less, so too, nobleness enkindles nobleness. The merit of that saying was very evident when Luminaries graced the sanctum sanctorium of JECRC University during the recently concluded Fourth Edition of Wonder of Words. This small effort which started in 2012 has now captivated the audience and is much awaited event of the year.  It is true that one can perhaps glean a bit of their  wisdom from reading their  work but a personal interaction is another experience altogether. The windy morning/afternoon are forever etched in the memory and shall recall the experience with pleasure and pride.

It is rightly said that , “A true entrepreneur is one who does something radical and someone who jumps off the cliff and builds a ladder on the way down”.  is worth considering by the present generation.

We have had the privilege of hosting stalwarts from the field of Arts, Literature, Music and  Academics in last four years. The Dignitaries who visited JECRC University were Sheniz Janmohamed , Andrea Di Robilant, Mary Harper, Imogen Edwards Jones , Vikram Sampath, Bhavya Kaushik , Andrew Lycett , Ray Monk, Partha Mitter , Rana Mitter , Peter Godwin , Sheren El Feki , Russel Pullan , Ashwin Sanghi, Dave Goulson , Aruni Kashyap , Hansda Sowendra Shakhar , Meena Kandasamy Om Thanvi , Sahil Maqbool, Alka Saraogi, Prof. R.Raj Rao , Rachel Kelly and Alving Pang .

Padma Vibhushan Professor Raghunathan Visits JECRC University

On Thursday the 14thMarch two eminent mathematicians of India Padmashree Prof (Dr.) M. S. Raghunathan from Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Mumbai and Prof. JugalVerma from IIT (Bombay) visited JECRC University.

Padma Vibhushan (and also Padmashree)- Prof. M. S. Raghunathan delivered a lecture on Indian Mathematician of India in the last century. We owe a lot to mathematicians such as Harish Chandra and Vinay Kumar Patodi whose contributions lead to many discoveries in Physics and other applied technologies. Prof. JugalVerma talked about the geometry of Polygons and their Algebraic understanding.

Prof. M. S. Raghunathan, while replying to questions of audience and later in an interview said we in India need to revive and rejuvenate our mathematical heritage. This could only be achieved if more youngsters, particularly brighter ones take up Mathematics as their career. There has to be greater funding for mathematical research and we need to produce more fundamental research. However, a few mathematicians of Indian origin in USA and Europe are doing very good Mathematics. So far no Indian has received ‘Field Medal’ until now. ‘Field Medal’ is also known as Nobel Prize of Mathematics. It is conferred to a mathematician for a first rate original contribution in the development of Mathematics. We are expecting it to happen in the near Future.

The entire basis of modern Information Technology and Computer Science is ‘Discrete Mathematics’. The cutting edge technological developments in these fields are possible only with research and development in ‘Fundamental Mathematics’. Thus, it is pertinent to strengthen this basis in India.

Profile of Speakers

JECRC University Campus Padmashree Prof (Dr.) M. S. Raghunathanis an Indian mathematician and is currently Head of the National Centre for Mathematics, Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai. He was formerly Professor of eminence at TIFR in HomiBhabha Chair. Prof Raghunathan received his Ph.D. in Mathematics from (TIFR), University of Mumbai. Prof. Raghunathan   obtained   B.A.(Hons)   in   Mathematics   from   Madras University   and   a   Ph.D.   from   Bombay  University(TIFR). His principal   area   of   research   is Lie   groups. Professor Raghunathan has received numerous academic awards. Government of India awarded him Padma   Shri   in   2001.   Raghunathan is a Fellow of the Royal Society and of the Third World Academy of Sciences. He was the Chairman of the National   Board   for   Higher   Mathematics   of   the   Department   of   Atomic   Energy   (Govt. Of India) during 1987-2006.

Abstract of the talk:

"Some personalities on the 20th century Indian Mathematical Scene"- Padmashree Prof (Dr.) M. S. Raghunathan

This talk is about some mathematicians who made significant contributions to mathematics during the 20th century giving some interesting biographical information and also touching upon their mathematical contributions and their influence on the development of mathematics in the country.

Prof(Dr.) Jugal Kishore Vermais Professor, Department of Mathematics, Indian Institute of Technology Bombay. Professor Jugal Kishore Verma has made substantial and fundamental contributions to the important area of mixed multiplicities in commutative algebra. His research in this area has had a great impact in neighboring fields. The study of Hilbert functions and blow-up algebras have been greatly enriched by his work. His interpretation of mixed volumes as mixed multiplicities has given a purely algebraic proof of a well-known theorem of Bernstein.

Abstract of the talk:

“Constructible Regular Polygons” -Prof (Dr.) Jugal Kishore Verma

After describing a brief history of constructible regular polygons, the methods of constructions for a regular pentagon and a regular 17-gon due to Richmond will be described. The method of Gauss for constructability in terms of periods of the 17th roots of unity will be discussed. We will then outline an algebraic
proof of a necessary condition for constructible real numbers which will then show why we cannot construct, with ruler and compasses, regular polygons of p sides where p is a prime number but not a Fermat prime.
